Donal – Independent walking guide and tour coordinatorIn recent years I have organised various walking tours for Ramblers clubs in Spain, Ireland and Italy. Since 1999 I have led tours throughout Europe and worldwide and worked many years as a full time walking guide in Spain. I am based part of the year in Spain and am from Belfast originally where I worked as a language teacher.
The hundreds of tours I have led and groups I have walked with have given me an understanding of what makes for a successful and enjoyable walking holiday:
- walks pitched at the right level incorporating varied terrain and landscape;
- getting an insight into the local area with like minded people
- a guide or leader catering to each member of the group, not following a preordained schedule.
- comfortable and appropriate accommodation, in the right location;
- Let’s not forget, a holiday price which isn’t inflated by overheads or payments to agents and middle men.
Being semi-retired (though still relatively young!) I do this not purely as a commercial exercise and certainly not as a career option but because this is what I enjoy doing most. I will personally be guiding the walks, where necessary with larger groups, in conjunction with other expert local guides with whom I have worked on previous tours. The areas and suggested walks in this website are all special in their own way.
